Rally Argentina Pace Report

Rally Argentina 2019 won by Thierry Neuville

Thierry Neuville won Rally Argentina with another strong drive in a car that out-performed it’s rivals. Taking advantage of road order on the terrible road conditions of Friday got the three championship protagonists into the top 3 spots for the weekend’s dryer stages. Though the drivers wouldn’t do much wrong, Sebastien Ogier lost power steering and three positions. Meanwhile Ott Tanak’s Toyota Yaris would fail completely. Neuville could cruise to the finish whilst Ogier would eventually regain the positions he lost.

Andreas Mikkelsen had a solid drive to second place. Kris Meeke was also beset with problems in his Toyota Yaris. A ten second penalty was the final straw which ultimately cost him a season first foot on the podium.

Jari-Matti Latvala had a great rally but for one stage – SS8 where a spin cost him significant time. Dani Sordo also had a good rally, though he pulled off his signature move of dropping a few positions towards the end of the rally.

Teemu Suninen was surprisingly slow and below the 1s/km benchmark on average for the rally. This could be down to a combination of engine issues, intercom issues and a little inexperience on the very thick mud.

Suninen’s teammate Elfyn Evans however did not finish. Sliding on a fast right-hander on SS10 Mataderos, he hit a boulder and rolled off the road, damaging the car beyond repair.

Esapekka Lappi also had a very big roll on SS8 Santa Rosa. By this point he was already off the expected pace and was perhaps pushing a little harder to limit the gap.
