Rally Sweden JWRC Pace Report

JWRC Rally Sweden

Rally Sweden JWRC Recap

Tom Kristensson took JWRC victory at Rally Sweden in the first round of 2019. Though he wasn’t necessarily the fastest on the stages. Martins Sesks was very strong early on but his Fiesta R2 suffered an engine problem on Friday forcing retirement. Dennis Radstrom had clocked up 9/12 fastest stage times before an incident on SS13 caused too much damage to continue.

Second and third placed Roland Poom and Jan Solans had steady rallies to finish on the podium. Julius Tannert and Ken Torn are two drivers who may feel they could have been on those steps had luck been on their side.

When your finished here don’t forget to see the following round’s Rally Mexico Report. See also the pace reports for WRC Rally Sweden and WRC2Pro.

JWRC Podium

Tom Kristensson

  • JWRC Classification: 1st
  • RC4 Class Classification: 1st
  • Overall Classification: 30th
  • Time: 3:14:48.9
  • JWRC xC: 4th
  • RC4 Class xC: 4th
  • Overall xC: 44th
  • Average Pace: +0.9s/km
  • Rally Time Rating: 96.24%
  • Class Stage Wins: 1/19
  • Best Pace: Stage win on SS3 against all competitors in class.
  • Notable Time Loss: None.
  • Review: As the old cliche goes ‘To finish first, first you have to finish’. For me to make one up ‘Let your competitors deal in luck’. A strong performance with minimal risk.

Roland Poom

  • JWRC Classification: 2nd
  • RC4 Class Classification: 2nd
  • Overall Classification: 31st
  • Time: 3:16:20.1
  • JWRC xC: 5th
  • RC4 Class xC: 5th
  • Overall xC: 46th
  • Average Pace: +1.2s/km
  • Rally Time Rating: 95.09%
  • Class Stage Wins: 0/19
  • Best Pace: SS5 (+0.3s/km)
  • Notable Time Loss: Possible issue with the car on SS14 not reflected too heavily in the stage time.
  • Review: Poom, like Kristensson, drove a consistent rally to the finish. His position was secure after Tannert’s Saturday issues.

Jan Solans

  • JWRC Classification: 3rd
  • RC4 Class Classification: 3rd
  • Overall Classification: 33rd
  • Time: 3:18:58.1
  • JWRC xC: 7th
  • RC4 Class xC: 8th
  • Overall xC: 50th
  • Average Pace: +1.7s/km
  • Rally Time Rating: 93.11%
  • Class Stage Wins: 1/19
  • Best Pace: Stage win on SS16.
  • Notable Time Loss: SS13 (+4.1s/km)
  • Review: Also drove without risk or incident. An expected classification of 7th makes the taste of champagne even sweeter.

Should Have Been on the Podium

Dennis Radstrom

  • JWRC Classification: 8th
  • RC4 Class Classification: 9th
  • Overall Classification: 42nd
  • Time: 3:38:20.0
  • JWRC xC: 1st
  • RC4 Class xC: 1st
  • Overall xC: 36th
  • Average Pace: +0.1s/km (Completed Stages)
  • Rally Time Rating: 78.55%
  • Class Stage Wins: 11/19
  • Retirements: 1 (Mechanical SS13)
  • Best Pace: 11 stage wins overall and had only lost 28.6 seconds to fastest times when he had to retire.
  • Notable Time Loss: SS3 – 25.5 of that 28.6s just mentioned was lost on this stage. Four stages missed at 7 minutes each was massively damaging.
  • Review: Way above his class for most of the rally. But if he was at the limit to record such incredible times, he must have breached it when he slid off into a ditch on SS13 nulling his chances of a win. If JWRC is for learning, he may learn about pace management when leading by over 1m40s. However that cannot overshadow an otherwise fantastic performance.

Martins Sesks

  • JWRC Classification: 6th
  • RC4 Class Classification: 6th
  • Overall Classification: 37th
  • Time: 3:28:09.8
  • JWRC xC: 2nd
  • RC4 Class xC: 2nd
  • Overall xC: 41st
  • Average Pace: +0.9s/km (Completed Stages)
  • Rally Time Rating: 86.20%
  • Class Stage Wins: 3/19
  • Retirements: 1 (Engine SS7)
  • Best Pace: Strong throughout.
  • Notable Time Loss: 2 missed stages. SS11 (+12.7s/km)
  • Review: Strong throughout the rally and unfortunate that his chances of a win were ended due to issues with the engine. Restarted in 10th 5 minutes behind 9th place, but a strong performance lifted him to 6th in class.

Ken Torn

  • JWRC Classification: 10th
  • RC4 Class Classification: 11th
  • Overall Classification: 44th
  • Time: 3:38:48.9
  • JWRC xC: 3rd
  • RC4 Class xC: 3rd
  • Overall xC: 42nd
  • Average Pace: +4.5s/km
  • Rally Time Rating: 78.19%
  • Class Stage Wins: 2/19
  • Penalties: 1 (5:00.0 – finished SS5 without co-driver)
  • Best Pace: Stong stages on Saturday
  • Notable Time Loss: Double whammy on SS5 – ~18 minutes in a ditch plus 5 for the penalty. Accident on SS13 (+7.4s/km).
  • Review: If you omit SS5, Ken’s average pace rises to 1.2s/km. But for this early incident and the roll on SS13 he had a strong rally otherwise.
